Novelista estadounidense. Se trasladó a Nebraska con su familia a los nueve años; regresó al este 12 años más tarde y finalmente se estableció en Nueva York. El jardín del gnomo (1905), su primer libro de cuentos, contiene parte de su trabajo más conocido. Las novelas Pioneros (1913) y Mi Antonia (1918), considerada su obra más lograda, celebran el espíritu y el valor de los pioneros que colonizaron la frontera norteamericana. El canto de la alondra (1915), Youth and the Bright Medusa [La juventud y la Medusa radiante] (1920) y otras obras suyas narran el difícil ascenso de una persona de talento en un pueblo marcado por el provincialismo. Uno de nosotros (1922, Premio Pulitzer) y Una dama extraviada (1923) describen la pérdida del espíritu de los pioneros. Los pioneros de antaño inspiraron también La muerte llama al arzobispo (1927) y Sombras en la roca (1931).
